Do you remember Maypo? You probably don’t, but your parents or grandparents do.
Back in the 1950s, the company that made the maple-flavored instant oatmeal hired a former Disney animator to create a series of TV commercials. They featured Marky Maypo, a little boy in an outsized cowboy hat, and his Uncle Ralph. The ad campaign’s catchphrase was “I want my Maypo!” and when MTV was born, it borrowed the tagline for its own iconic “I want my MTV.”
The brand may be old, but it was low sugar before low sugar was cool. Even though little Marky liked that Maypo “tastes like maple sugar candy,” the cereal actually only has 4 grams of sugar, which is about a third of other maple-flavored instant oatmeal on the market.
The company that makes Maypo is on a major push to popularize the old-school cereal and has introduced a variety of Maypo that mixes in quinoa flakes, which pushes the protein content up to 5 grams a serving.
Since it’s fall, I’m feeling the urge to revel in autumnal flavors. So I gathered up a bunch of Thanksgiving-like ingredients for my breakfast, which I call a Big Bowl of Autumn.

- ½ cup Maypo With Quinoa
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons chopped nuts (I used pecans)
- 2 tablespoons dried cranberries
- ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 teaspoon real maple syrup
- In a good-sized microwavable bowl, combine Maypo, water, nuts, cranberries and pumpkin pie spice and depending on the power of your microwave, cook for 1 ½ to 2 minutes. (My microwave is 1,200 watts and 1 ½ minutes is perfect.)
- Remove bowl from microwave, stir until creamy and combined, then drizzle the maple syrup on top.
Do you have any old-school brands or foods that are coming back into your foodie rotation? —Gail
