When my husband and I first met, we were young and silly and definitely not great cooks. But we were both pretty solid at making one important dish: grilled cheese. We even had a grilled cheese-off one night, each making a sandwich using our preferred ingredients. The verdict? They were made of bread, lots of melty cheese and butter. Both were delicious because of course they were.
But as I’ve gotten (marginally) older and considerably more adventurous in the kitchen, I’ve learned that, while there’s certainly a time and a place for your traditional grilled cheese (like on my couch, snuggled up with a blanket and a mug of hot tomato soup while I catch up on my shows on a rainy evening), there are also a ton of really interesting — even gourmet! — options out there worth exploring.
In case your local food truck doesn’t offer tasty, cheesy grilled delights, we have a few killer gourmet grilled cheese ideas from The Hudson that’ll fit the bill.
3 Gourmet Grilled Cheese Ideas
Grilled Mac & Cheese: Rustic Artisan Whole Wheat Bread with Hudson Jalapeno Mac & Cheese. Note: Toast on the INSIDE of the bread before assembling.
The Door Guy Loves Me: White Bread, Turkey, Swiss, Tomato, Spinach, Bacon, Monterey Jack and/or Havarti.
May I Steal Your Wife: Brioche (done like French toast), Ham, Gruyere Cheese, Raspberry Sauce, Powdered Sugar, Sliced Ham, Fontina + Mozzarella.
Have you ever had — or made — a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich that you fell totally in love with? My first experience was when I ordered a “sexy” grilled cheese with some high end cheddar at a restaurant — the sexy part was the tomato inside. Then, recently, I had one with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes and spinach and I think I’m still having dreams about it! —Kristen
